ANNE PHILLIPS singer, composer, arranger, conductor, producer began her career as a member of the Ray Charles Singers on the Perry Como Show. Since that time her career has covered almost every area of the music business. In addition to recording an album of her own, "Born To Be Blue", she worked as a singer and choral arranger/conductor with many of the music world's leading artists from Carol King and Mahalia Jackson to Sammy Davis Jr., George Jones and Neil Diamond. She is widely known in the industry as the writer/arranger/producer of many national commercials such as "What Has Sheraton Done For You Lately?" the famous telephone number "800-325-3535" and "Taste That Beats The Others Cold" for Pepsi Cola which she arranged and produced for such rock stars as the Four Tops, and Martha and the Vandellas. Her show, "Bending Towards The Light...A Jazz Nativity", the Christmas story told through the medium of jazz with stars such as Dave Brubeck, Lionel Hampton and Tito Puente playing all the roles, has become "a new New York Christmas tradition." New York Magazine Performed annually in New York City. It is published for rental by G. Schirmer and has local productions in many cities each Christmas. “Jazz-style nativity has audience shouting ‘Hallelujah!” Topeka Capital Journal Dec. 2000. Ms. Phillips choral arrangements from the show are available through Shawnee Press. Ms. Phillips musical "Brush Arbor Revival," recently was given a full production in the Bahamas; her children's musical, "The Great Grey Ghost of Old Spook Lane" is performed in communities around the country; her Gospel musical, "A Spark of Faith", toured colleges and churches on the east coast; her Easter Mass, "Sing, For The Lord Has Risen", was given its debut performance at St. Patrick's Cathedral; and "Behold, How Beautiful...Readings and Music of Creation", commissioned by St. Mark's Cathedral in Minneapolis was also performed at St. Bartholomew's Church in New York. Two musicals, “Damn Everything But The Circus” and “God Knows” were optioned for Broadway and a cabaret piece, “Best Kept Secret” has been performed in New York. Ms. Phillips has orchestrated and produced CDs for her husband, tenor saxophonist Bob Kindred, and has performed with him in pops concerts as conductor and singer. She has also written arrangements for the American Boychoir. For five years she was Director of Music for the 9AM service at St. Bartholomew's Church on Park Ave, is now on the faculty of New York University School of Contemporary Music and Jazz. In order to introduce today’s children to the Great American Song, Anne and her husband have begun Children's Jazz Choirs. through their not-for-profit organization, The Kindred Spirits Foundation.. The first was in Washington DC for Mrs. William Bennett's youth development program for inner-city girls. "Best Friends" for which she is now National Jazz Choir Director. Ms. Phillips’ first album, “Born To Be Blue,”recorded in 1959, has now been re-released on CD to rave reviews - “Exquisite, tender...a classic collection that no serious music lover can afford to be without.” Rex Reed, “on a par with Frank’s Wee Small Hours” JAZZ In 2001 she released a second solo CD ‘ “Gonna lay My Heart on the Line” on which she performs songs she has written, both music and lyrics. “Some of the best songs I’ve heard in years.” Margaret Whiting Her most recent CD, NOEL NOEL Christmas carols written for a 25 voice a cappella choir was released last season and a new vocal CD, “Ballet Time” on which she sings with such jazz greats as Dave Brubeck and Marian McPartland will be released soon. Ms Phillips has received great reviews recently in concert with such jazz giants as Roger Kellaway at The Bakery in Los Angeles (“a captivating performer” Variety), her husband saxophonist Bob Kindred, and at the Triad in New York in her act with singer Julius La Rosa, “Have You Ever Heard a Song.” Ms. Phillips was recently awarded the “Heart of Gold” award from the Best Friends Foundation in Washington DC for her work with her Children’s Jazz Choirs. For many years she was a National Trustee of NARAS and the New York representative for the Grammy show. Last fall she was a juror for the Coming Up Taller Awards presented by the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities. She is listed in Who's Who in Entertainment.
