Gianandrea Noseda Chief Conductor 'Noseda is clearly a forceful personality; Mancunian musical life won't be dull while he is around.' The Times Chief Conductor Gianandrea Noseda was appointed in September 2002. The relationship with the BBC Philharmonic has thrived, and last September he renewed his contract until 2010. His successes with the Orchestra include their compelling Beethoven Symphony Cycle at The Bridgewater Hall in 2005, which was broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and then made available for free download from the BBC Radio 3 website. As well as winning great critical acclaim, the initiative was taken up by 1.4 million people, and won the Orchestra an ITV South Bank Show Award. Through his association with the BBC Philharmonic, Gianandrea Noseda is an exclusive artist of Chandos Records. He has released eleven recordings, which include his ongoing exploration of Liszt’s orchestral music which reaches its conclusion with the Dante Symphony, released in May 2009. Other composers covered include Respighi, Prokofiev (the first complete recording of The Stone Flower), Karlowicz, Dallapiccola, Dvorak, Shostakovich and Mahler. All have been successfully reviewed worldwide. Opera is one of Gianandrea’s great musical passions and it is a genre he has explored to stunning effect with the BBC Philharmonic. An unforgettable performance of Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades in May 2004 set high standards, and last season his interpretation of Rachmaninoff’s short opera Francesca da Rimini prompted David Fanning of The Daily Telegraph to write: “If the Chandos recording scheduled the day after this concert has captured half as much excitement [as this concert], it will set new standards for this work – and maybe even force a wholesale reassessment of Rachmaninoff’s achievement as an operatic composer.” Noseda and the Orchestra are regularly invited to perform in the major European cities; their 06/07 Season opened with a trip to the Prague Autumn Festival, followed by Vienna in the Spring. In March 08 they embark on tour to China, Korea and Japan – they were immediately invited to return to Tokyo (three dates this time) following their performances there to packed houses in 2005. In 1997 Gianandrea became the first foreign Principal Guest Conductor at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg He has conducted the Mariinsky Theatre – both on tour and in St Petersburg – in new productions of opera and ballet including their first ever production of Mozart’s Così fan tutte (2002) and Puccini’s Il trittico (2003). In 2002 he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York conducting Prokofiev’s War and Peace, which he also conducted at Covent Garden and La Scala. He returned to the Met in 2006 with La forza del destino (Verdi) and in December 2007 returned there to conduct Verdi’s Un Ballo In Maschera, directed by Piero Faggioni. In February last year he accepted the title of Musical Director at Teatro Regio in Turin, one of Europe’s premiere opera houses - his first major operatic post in his native Italy. Gianandrea is Principal Conductor of the Orquesta de Cadaqués in Spain and Artistic Director of the Stresa Festival on the shores of Lake Maggiore, near his home in Northern Italy. In August 2004 he appeared for the first time at the Tanglewood Festival conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He returned to the USA in Autumn 2005 to conduct the New York Philharmonic and made his debut with the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Montreal Symphony orchestras.
