He lived in Houston, until age 9, shortly after that, moved to New York where his younger sister was born in the early 90’s. Blak’s mother was married for awhile to his father, Robert C. Smith Sr. up until he was 11 years old. "For as long as I can remember, I never really had a good relationship with my father", says Blak His father was gone for much of his life and when he was around, his parents spent most of their time arguing and fighting. His Father was very abusive to his mother mentally and physically, so he grew up in a very hostile environment since a kid, until one night he heard his mother scream, and that’s when he ran downstairs to see his father holding a knife to her neck, from that point, that was probably the last time he saw his father for awhile. He pretty much grew up as a typical kid living in Section 8, involved in all the wrong things, while his mother worked multiple jobs to support him and his younger sister. After running the streets, going to jail and feeling that his life was going nowhere, he decided to join the Army for a new start at life. Since Blak was a child, music was always a part of his life but, he started his passion for music by writing poems about some of the things that endeavored in his life until eventually, the poetry turned into hip-hop. Blak recorded his 1st single “Deep Zone” at the age of 12, while he was part of a group called “Image” which eventually broke up. And at that point Blak moved and ventured out on his own. By the time he was in high school Blak developed a reputation for rapping in ciphers at school before the bell rang battling different individuals. He said that he never really took rhyming seriously, because he viewed it as a hobby. He created a local buzz and shortly after that, developed the stage name “BLAK”. He ventured on writing rhymes and performing in many different talent events, while working on recording his first single. Shortly after joining the Army, he was assigned to Germany. While overseas Blak started to take the possibility of becoming a hip-hop artist on a professional basis seriously. So he purchased some studio equipment and built a home studio in his apartment where he and local artists could come to write, and record tracks to sell or listen to. While he continued performing in different talent competitions where he won 1st place most of the time and developed a lot of credibility locally as an artist. Blak was approached by a producer by the name of Jagged who at the time gave him the opportunity to feature on his up and coming album “Tight Life 2”; Blak also featured on a record which was being sold in Germany with a German artist by the name of 2clock”. Shortly after that he decided to put out his own underground album entitled “Black History” which featured another up and coming artist who he had been working with named Dolo. They wrote, recorded and produced the album in his home studio. Blak and Lo also organized and planned an album release party where they rented a club, and purchased all the necessary studio equipment needed to perform and also they auditioned and found other local artist to open up for there group. They sold approximately 200- 500 copies underground. "Music is an expression of art; I feel that as artist we have the power to influence and express our way of life through music to inspire the generation" say Blak. He is an incredible artist with a voice that starves to be heard. Blak’s love for music is the definition of Hip-hop and it clearly shows his loyalty and passion the he has for performing and writing music. Blak is a very hard worker willing to do what it takes to support his career as an artist. He has been through the ins and outs of the business; and feels that his music is part of the ongoing movement in Hip-hop. "The current state of hip-hop in some areas lacks creativity, most artist are trying to emulate what’s already be done" says Blak. Robert C.
