Tenor Douglas Perry has distinguished himself throughout the United States and Europe as a versatile singing actor, recognized for his unique characterizations of over ninety operatic roles. He is best known for his universally acclaimed portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi in Philip Glass’ opera Satyagraha, in which he made his European debut in the world premiere of this work with Netherlands Opera. This role also brought Mr. Perry to his debuts with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, and Seattle Opera. He made his Metropolitan Opera debut in the world premiere of Glass’ The Voyage. He also appeared in the world premiere of Glass’ White Raven in Lisbon, at the Teatro Real in Madrid and in his debut with the Lincoln Center Festival. Mr. Perry can be heard as Gandhi in Satyagraha on the best-selling CBS recording and on recordings of Glass’ Songs from Liquid Days and Virgil Thomsen’s The Mother of Us All. He made his debut at La Scala and the Vienna State opera in Leonard Bernstein’s A Quiet Place, conducted by Maestro Bernstein and recorded by DGG and televised throughout Europe. Additionally, Mr. Perry is a frequent quest with opera companies throughout the United States and Canada, including the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Seattle Opera, San Diego Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Baltimore Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Company of Philadelphia, Florida Grand Opera Portland Opera, L’Opera de Montreal, among others. Recent engagements include a return to Indianapolis Opera as Arturo and Normanno in Lucia di Lammermoor and Njegus in The Merry Widow, Tanzmeister in Ariadne auf Naxos with Pittsburgh Opera, Goro in Madama Butterfly with Florida Grand Opera, L’Opera de Montreal, and Portland Opera, Spoletta in Tosca with Cleveland Opera, Beadle in Sweeney Todd with The Princeton Festival, Orlovsky in Die Fledermaus with Indianapolis Opera, and Monostatos in The Magic Flute with Cleveland Opera. Future engagements include Goro in Madama Butterfly in Opera Omaha and the Princeton Festival, Pong in Turandot with Nashville and Indianapolis Operas, and Dancing Master in Manon Lescaut with Florida Grand Opera. A frequent guest with Florida Grand Opera, he has appeared there as Arnalta in L’incoronazione di Poppea, Orlovsky in Die Fledermaus, Goro in Madama Butterfly, the Four Servants in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Pang and Pong in Turandot, Borsa in Rigoletto, Schmidt in Werther, Guillot in Manon and Missail in Boris Godunov. His roles with Houston Grand opera have included the Idiot in Wozzeck and John Styx in Orpheus in the Underworld. In San Diego he has sung Goro in Madama Butterfly, Triquet in Eugene Onegin, and the Third Jew in Salome.
