Ian Sutherland was born Ian Christopher Sutherland on November 5, 1987. Born in the South Suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, he grew up with his siter and his mom in a small, very drafrty house. His father passed away when Ian was only 5 years old, and he claims this is constantly inspiring him to write. He says "I suppose it's almost like with all of my songs, I'm trying to communicate with my father, I think it's worked once or twice." His music ranges from basic simple americana folk, to strange modern dark folk, even stepping into Thom Yorke-esque mixes of electronic beats and synth sounds, layered into dream-like vocal pieces. Sutherland also experiments with what he calls "Sound Collages", which he describes as "Taking a bunch of sounds, and laying them out in an order, usually random, and seeing what sort of rhythm or melody this makes, and then re-arranging this multiple times (sometimes hundreds) until I'm most satisfied. Then, I might record a guitar line over that, and some vocals, or I'll just leave it as this strange string of sounds, layerd on hundreds of strings of other sounds." Ian is also one of the many new musicians experimenting with organic noise, and found-sound. His favorite resources for these two reasonably young forms of music are feedback, and tape manipulation. "It's not exactly organic, but it's certainly random, and un-predictable, which gives it a very organic feel. You can never predict what a cheap tape deck will do if you pour water onto it, while playing a tape of different tones of feedback from it." Is what Ian tells us. Currently Ian has two solid projects, Ghosts, which is mostly weird folk, and is known to be very personal and heart-felt, and Arteries and Veins, which is his noise project. He claims the songs for Arteries and Veins sound improvised, but actually arrive after hours of planning, and days of actual recording work, followed by nearly endless tweaking.
