Lee Douglas is the musical nom de plume of Brooklynite by way of Los Angeles Doug Lee. As the story goes, the extraordinarily talented illustrator and designer wrote and produced “Same Changes” and “Our Song”, only to hand them off to Rong head honcho DJ Spun a few years later. Spun along with the rest of the NYC disco community subsequently flipped out over Mr. Lee’s music and thus the man, the myth that is Lee Douglas was born. Since making his most excellent debut, Lee’s amassed an armada of edits created primarily for his wildly eclectic DJ sets, which take in everything from psychedelic rock, house, funk, acid and, of course, some disco nuggets. A few of the man’s edits recently dropped on the famed Editions Disco and Wurst Edits imprints, respectively. The latter release boasted the epic “Breakwind,” which Optimo saw fit to include on the inaugural mix for Pitchfork’s new DJ mix series. 2007 also saw the release of Lee’s massive disco anthem “New York Story.” Chock full of the vintage synth instrumentation and deep grooves the name Lee Douglas has become synonymous with, the song’s already been embraced by too many top jocks to list here. With a bevy of tunes in the pipeline, and DJ gigs the world over, you can be sure you’ll be hearing a lot more from the funky brotha from Fort Greene.
