Marius de Vries (born Marius van Wyk de Vries) is an English music producer. He was born in London in 1961. He has been behind some of the key albums and singles of recent times, (gathering five Grammy nominations along the way), the best known of these being his writing and production contributions to Madonna's Bedtime Stories and Ray of Light albums. He is also a long time collaborator and friend of Björk's and the band Massive Attack. He co-produced Neil Finn's album Try Whistling This and Robbie Robertson's album Contact from the Underworld of Red Boy, as well as producing David Gray's latest album Life in Slow Motion. De Vries also produced and co-wrote Darren Hayes' song I Forgive You on his album The Tension and the Spark [2004]. De Vries produced both of Rufus Wainwright's 'Want' albums and appeared on the documentary, 'All I Want', about Wainwright's life. He is documented as saying that one of the songs, 'I don't know What it Is' was one of the most complex production challenges he has ever faced. The song included hundreds of separate parts which de Vries had to fit into one five and a half minute song. De Vries was the Music Director on the 2001 film Moulin Rouge! and worked with Nellee Hooper on the film soundtrack for Romeo and Juliet, as co-composer, programmer, and co-producer. Both of these projects won de Vries BAFTA awards, and he was awarded an Ivor Novello award for his compositional work on the former. He also wrote the score for Stephan Elliott's surreal thriller "The Eye of the Beholder" Most recently, de Vries has produced and written with Josh Groban on his multiplatinum 2007 release "Awake", and mixed Rufus Wainwright's new (2007) LP "Release the Stars". He is currently developing an hour-long modern dance work with choreographer Rafael Bonachela. On a side note, de Vries is related to South African music producer Piet van Wyk de Vries, who works almost exclusively in the South African Afrikaans speaking market. Read more on Last.fm.
