Marvin, "The Paranoid Android", is a "Personality Prototype" robot developed by the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation as part of their "Genuine People Personalities" series of robotics, infused with real human emotion and personalities, and marketed with the tagline, "Your Plastic Pal who's fun to be with!" Unfortunately, his personality didn't turn out to be a very pleasant one; upon activation Marvin soon becomes chronically and miserably depressed. He was included as a service robot on the remarkable starship Heart of Gold (along with a host of other Sirius Cybernetics' GPP series), which was later stolen by Zaphod Beeblebrox, Galactic President. On Earth, in 1981, Marvin achieved his own 15 minutes of fame when he released two singles: Marvin, featuring the tracks "Marvin" and "Metal Man", reaching number 53 on the British Charts, and then the follow-up Double B-Side featuring "Reasons To Be Miserable" and "Marvin, I Love You". When asked about his newfound stardom, Marvin simply commented, "It's wretched." Marvin, Zaphod, the Heart of Gold, and the Marketing Division of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation are all the creations of author Douglas Adams, and are featured heavily in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and its sequels: The Restaurant at the End of the Universe; Life, The Universe, and Everything; So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish; and Mostly Harmless.
