Micronaut

There are two artists with the name “Micronaut”: Stefan Streck from Germany Chris Randall from the United States MICRONAUT (GER) ‘micronaut’, a sound collage project working with ambient sounds, various samples and live guitar, had its first successes within different art exhibitions, e.g., Artgenda in Hamburg, Castle Plüschow, ‘Sehnsucht_Identität_Farbe’ (work-in-progress / performance), the Kulturgüterbahnhof and the Albert Watson exhibition in Rostock. The dubbing of ‘Microkosmos’ is among the most interesting of these projects. Shortly after, at the request of a friend, micronaut created its first live set with danceable beats. Bookings with Chris Korda, Kombinat 100, Asci Disco, Savas Pascadilis, Ada, Notwist, Wighnomy Brothers, Metope, Jake Fairley, Paul Kalkbrenner, Apparat, and Phono followed as a result. micronaut had releases on Tussikoffer and Voltage Musique. micronaut's energetic live sets center on the guitar, the root instrument of his music. From the arid analog syncopation of the self-titled first album (1998), through the IDM-influenced progressive house and drum ‘n’ bass rhythms of Io (2000) and Ganymede (2002), to the complex cinematic soundscapes of 2005’s Europa, Micronaut releases have kept pace with the current state of electronic music, while carving out a distinct niche at the same time. The Micronaut project was begun in 1997 by Randall as an vehicle for releasing music that wasn’t necessarily appropriate for the industrial music fans of Sister Machine Gun; by 2005, with the release of Europa and the Noise To Signal tour with label-mate Amish Rake Fight, Micronaut had morphed in to a project that could stand on its own. Micronaut has superseded Sister Machine Gun to become Randall’s main creative outlet, with numerous appearances in soundtracks to video games and television shows leading to wider recognition and acceptance, as well as critical success. Callisto, the next Micronaut release, will allegedly take the filmscapes and sophisticated rhythms of Europa a step further. “I’ve really started to pay attention to the music in movies, how it works with the images for sort of an emotional body-blow,” says Randall. “My ultimate goal is to make an album that doesn’t need a movie at all, but is a soundtrack that evokes imagery on its own.” Read more on Last.fm.
