Mighty Math

Mighty Math Robert Shaw is Mighty Math. Musician, programmer and performer....born Council Trash but danced right out of the womb. His first single was the post punk hymn 'Spirit Of Youth' released in 1979 on Graduate Records. By fluke or miracle this made the Independant Charts for one week. From this electric maelstrom to the all-acoustic Swans Way, most of his youthful ambitions were realised in this band; from the experimental and highly individualistic jazz played at various arts venues including The Triangle Theatre (Birmingham) and Galerie Des Lombards (Paris). to an album recorded in New York, and an appearance on Top Of The Pops. The mid-80's saw a change in direction as Hip-Hop and Acid House encourage a growing interest in samplers and all things electronic. And so to Stylophonic, an electronic duo working with artists such as sound sculptor Johny Eastaby and photographer Ming de Nasty. Music, Video and Performance Art all featured in Stylophonic's outrageous soul-fuelled live shows. A developing interest in sampler and digital sound technology results in the solo project known as Mighty Math. The album 'Up Life Gone Star' (released on Different Drummer October 23rd 2000) has been praised by the likes of John Peel ('There are loads of boys and, increasingly, girls working away in their bedrooms utilising the best of the old technologies and the best of the new to produce music the like of which has never been heard before on earth. Mighty Math does some of the best of it, he really does.") and Pete Lawrence (The Big Chill). Highlights this year have included a John Peel Session (originally aired on March 22nd but due for a repeat on June 7th) and a debut live performance at The Big Chill Winter Love-In at Baskerville Hall in Haye-On-Wye. With two more Big Chill dates lined up (Larmer Tree Gardens on July 21st and Naxos / Greece on September 29th) plus a show with Detroit Techno Legend Carl Craig at The Leftfoot Night in Birmingham, Mighty Math is fast becoming a sought-after live performer and producer. His music has been licensed to several compilations this year, including The Big Chill Compilation 'Enchanted Garden 2', Smugg Records excellent 'Recliner' and Japanese label Play's 'Stone.
