Monareta started in Colombia, South America in 2000 when composer and producer Andres Martinez started playing break beats and hip hop in clubs and electronic music festivals in Bogota with his longtime friend, composer Camilo Sanabria. Since their high school years they've been interacting with different music projects that included funk and punk bands. They have been joined at the hip from primary school, the university, through music school where they both studied avant-garde electronic music composition techniques. Their current project combines the folk musics of Colombia with the wider trend in alternative Latin American electronic dance music. They draw from such diverse elements as dub beats, porros. Their music uses both new and old, modern and folk sensibilities to make innovative musical outcomes that disrupt easy definitions not reducible to their country of origin. Since 2006 they have reached an international audience with their Nacional Records release, Electroche. They have performed with such well-regarded groups as Aterciopelados and Nor-Tec Collective in such diverse locales as New York, Los Angeles, Bogotá, and Berlin. They have been enthusiastically received by a wide array of audiences as part of the emerging "Latin Alternative" scene that expands beyond traditional musical genres to embrace the cross-influences across the Americas. As such, their music has been featured on the soundtrack for the 2007 film, La Mujer de mi Hermano, as well as the Chicas Project. Their most recent full-length album, La Bonanza, was released in April of 2007. Read more on Last.fm.
