Papa Wheelie is a Stoner/Hardcore Punk powerhouse trio formed in 1996 consisting the legendary Metallica bassist Jason Newsted (Guitars/Vox) along with Steven Wiig (Drums) & Joefus (Bass). They play a thrashy brand of Stoner Rock with some definite Hardcore Punk influences, drawing an improvised structure with skeletons of riffs and no set lyrics, They call it Stönk (Stoner/Punk+Motörhead). The band emerged from a mountain biking-based friendship between Jason and his neighborhood bike shop owner. Early in the project, Newsted played the drums and fellow Michigan-native Steven Wiig played the guitar. Since then, Newsted assumed full guitar and vocal responsibilities while Wiig returned to the drumkit and handled artistic duties. The band records every single session at Newsted's home studio THE CHOPHOUSE and have played several Bay Area gigs - ranging from outdoor BBQs to his neighbor's living room birthday party to local legendary San Francisco rock clubs. After releasing two albums in 2002 (one being a studio record "Unipsycho" and the other the live album "Live Lycanthropy") the bend went in an idle state due to Newsted's other projects including Echobrain and Voivod. But it wasn't until August 2011 that Papa Wheelie marked their return with posting new photos on their official Facebook account, following with some gigs with Kyuss Lives! , Black Cobra and Venomous Maximus in the next month.
