Robert Raimon Roy talks like a seasoned philosopher. In reality, he’s a a full-time social entrepreneur for Time and a bookish MC ready to break — so really, he is a modern philosopher. We spoke with the LA singer/rapper about his third, upcoming album Le Tigre Blanc, Erykah Badu, wearing ties onstage, and his new single “Little Egypt Wavy.” Why the name change from Rob Roy to Robert Raimon Roy? Googlability? (if so we thank you!) Identity—and not just one’s public persona—is created, styled, and performed. Using my full birth name is an act of art consistent with this new series of work. There’s a tendency in our youth to rebel against what’s bestowed upon us by our family, to personalize our experience in a way that makes us feel more unique.
