"You have to make music as if you are living alone on a desert island.” If one listens to her album, Mmmmm, one will hear a combination of different styles: jazz, hiphop, close harmony and pop. “As soon as I’ve made a beat and hear the chords, I grab my guitar and make a melody,” says Roos about the process behind her singular songs. She improvises a lot and by always using different instruments seeks the right sound -- whatever that might be. Her texts are very personal, imaginative, light-footed and filled with double meanings. She sings, plays piano, guitar, harp and saxophone, and produces her own beats. Occasionally she collaborates with befriended musicians such as guitarist Rory Ronde, saxophonist Benjamin Herman and drummer Tim Dudek. As a singer/songwriter/producer, Roos records everything in her living room that is filled with her own piano, harp, laptop, plants, clean laundry and endless cups of tea. This situation helps keep her unique and focused. The end result is a very special album: dreamy but cheeky, sweet but cool, small, big, acoustic, heavy. These are loose pieces of art, beginning subtly but always evolving into full stories. Mmmmm will be released in The Netherlands on the 28th of May. Mmmmm will also be released in Japan on June 2nd.
