Shriek

There are three artists which use this name 1. A horror punk band from the United States 2. An indie rock band from the United Kingdom 3. An independent electronic music artist Shriek is a Cincinnati based horror punk band that formed in December of 1998 at the end of the second wave of horror following The Vladimirs (the only successful horror rock band in Cincinnati until the formation of Shriek.) Due to the stale condition of the horror scene at the time, Shriek’s original line-up gained much popularity around Cincinnati among the young punk and metal fans. As the scene grew again, the band quickly gained a reputation for their high energy stage performances, non-conformist attitudes (with much potential for violence), and catchy anthems with hooky choruses… a perfect accompaniment for alcohol consumption. Though they’re a typical horror punk band musically (monster, monster, whoa whoa whoa), Shriek has refused the traditional rules of horror punk attire, leaving behind the devil locks, pomps, blood stains, and B movie costuming in exchange for the tough guy look of denim and leather. Their image and music are influenced mostly by the Ramones and Misfits, among a handful of other bands from generations past, but don’t be fooled; they have successfully avoided being regarded as yet another “Misfits knock-off.” Popularity: Shriek is one of the few bands that has actually been successful playing this genre of music in the Cincinnati area, capable of packing large venues alone. The other two bands in the area with this kind of pull are The Vladimirs (est 1995) and The Reanimated (est 2007) for whom Greg Gallows (of Shriek) plays guitar. All of these bands have gained much popularity nationally, and even in small pockets internationally, but demand is especially strong within a 5 hour driving range of their home town. Shriek history: Shriek was formed in December of 1998 by Greg Gallows, Tony Adams, and Ryan Stone. In 2001, Josh Thompson replaced Tony Adams on the drums, and in 2002, Carl Wohl was added as a second guitarist. Carl left the band by the end of 2002. Shriek played again as a 3 piece until 2004 when they disbanded for a brief period. In 2005 the band was resurrected by Greg and Ryan by adding Steve Cox on the drums. The year 2006 saw Craig Reiff as a second guitarist, but 2007 saw him leave to be replaced by Brian Day of the Vladimirs, Brian played with Shriek into 2008 and then departed to continue The Vladimirs and Sono Morti. From 2008 until 2012 Shriek continued with the line-up everyone had come to know the most: Greg Gallows, Josh Thompson, Ryan Stone, and Steve Cox. The year 2012 marks a new beginning for Shriek as the line-up has changed due to personal matters. Ryan Stone was unable to continue any further. It has been the first time in 14 years that he and Greg Gallows have been separated. The current line-up as of April 2012 is: Greg Gallows, Josh Thompson, Steve Cox, Derek Dargum (lead guitar), and Sean Sleaze (bass guitar). 2. Shriek were an indie rock trio from Glasgow who signed to Deceptive Records after making an impact at Sound City ‘94 in Glasgow and impressing NME journalist Simon Williams. The band released debut double A side 7” single CRUSH / CALL YOURSELF A LOVER, recorded with Paul Tipler, in April 1994 and John Peel opened his show with the track. Tracks: Crush Girl Meets Girl Violent Mind Silver Head Shriek recorded a version of Girl Meets Girl for Volume Magazine compilation CD issue 12 and contributed a demo SHAVED to 7” CLUB SPANGLE along with Flinch, Goya Dress, Marion. Second CD single GIRL MEETS GIRL/ NO/ SCARED, recorded with Paul Tipler, was released in 1995 and the band toured the UK with GENE culminating in a sold out show at The Astoria with Salad. Shriek played The Barrowlands with Travis, The Delgados, Baby Chaosas part of Glasgow’s Mayfest 1995. The band played Scotland’s T in The Park Festival in 1995. Read more on Last.fm.
