Sidney Maiden (1923 - Unknown) was a blues singer and harmonica who played on classic tracks such as Eclipse of the Sun. Born in Mansfield, Louisiana, USA in 1923. Maidens harmonica style indicates he may have been influenced by John Lee (Sonny Boy) Williamson. Sidney Maiden moved to the Richmond area of California in the 1940's wherehe worked the shipyards and where he first met guitarist K.C. Douglas . Maiden and Douglas played clubs on the West Coast, and recorded "Eclipse of the Sun" in 1948 for the Down Town label run by Bob Geddins. In 1952 a session was recorded for Imperial with the Blues Blowers (including Douglas), followed in 1953 by "Hurry Hurry Baby" for the Flash label. In 1961 Maiden participated in a recording session, set up by Arhoolie Records boss Chris Strachwitz, reuniting him with Douglas for Trouble an' Blues released on Bluesville. The album was recorded in Berkeley by Kenneth S. Goldstein and Chris Strachwitz. Larry Cohen is quoted as saying of Sidney Maiden, "worthy of being mentioned along with the select few greats of the mouth-harp." During the 60s, he formed his own group and worked the Fresno area, since when his whereabouts and fate are unknown. Read more on Last.fm.
