Sofia Marikh (Arabic: صوفيا مريكه)also spelled Sophia El Mareekh (born October 15, 1982) is a musician and entertainer from Casablanca, Morocco. Upon the separation of her parents, Sofia lived with her eldest brother and mother in Marrakech and occasionally visited her father and two sisters in Casablanca. The divorce of her parents wasn't stronger than her, as she never stopped to shine through her obvious talent from the early days of singing at family parties and gatherings. At the age of 16, Sofia had a recording deal to work on a collaborative album with a French-speaking Moroccan singer, but this project was never completed due to production problems. Sofia's biggest appearance as a singer was in the Arabic version of Star Academy that was aired on the LBC in year 2003. Biography Sophia first stood in front of a camera at the age of 4 for a diaper advertisement! Soon the nation saw her in a range of selective commercials as she became a solicited model in her country and in France. At the age of 15, Sophia took part in the French motion picture “Soleil” starring Sophia Lauren and another Moroccan movie alongside actor Rasheed al Wali entitled “Wa Baad”. The breakthrough for this young lady was when she got admitted by chance to the famous reality talent program Star Academy Lebanon in its first season for the Middle East. Sophia came to the audition just to support a friend candidate but ended up getting herself the jury s approval and admiration! As the Arab nation saw for the first time this reality program where young talents pushed themselves to the limit to prove their singing abilities, Sophia became unanimously the audience’ s sweet voice and sweet heart. Millions of viewers watched closely Sophia’s every step in the academy and during the live performances where Sophia would sing angelically in front of yet a bigger audience who made it a ritual every Friday to watch Star Academy Lebanon as prime. Sophia was getting a high number of votes from the audience and the jury while she worked hard to perfect her performance. During her stay in the academy, Sophia became famous for playing the guitar and for her unique interpretation of the song “Je suis Malade” as audience around the Arab world started to love the song and sing it while they couldn’t understand a word of French! That was Sophia inside the Academy, determined yet graceful, creating her own image that became carved in the heart of many people who just couldn’t wait to see this young talent in the outside world… As the season ended the “Star Academy” Students where launched in the real world. A new era began for the new born star as she toured the Middle East for a series of sold out concerts. Tunis, Kuwait, Egypt, Dubai, Jordan and Lebanon were on the schedule, but most importantly a crowd of loyal fans racing to get a glimpse of their favorite “Academicienne” Sophia… Sophia who clearly stood out from her fellow candidates, was then chosen to perform at a unique concert with the promotion of Star Academy France in Lebanon. From then onward, Sophia became restless as the first Star Academy Lebanon album was released, the sales sky rocketed and the music video for the song “Jayi El Hakika” (the truth is coming) became one of the most requested on television. The Star Academy Lebanon mania soon got the group to feature in a high budget TV commercial for Pepsi. Sophia participated in Jamour Festival in her beloved Morocco where she sang wonderfully in front of a huge audience and a selection of VIPs. She also appeared as a main host and singer for Moroccan Channel 2 at New Year’s Eve 2005. Her elegance was still acclaimed by the media even long after the magic event was over. Sophia was careful to stay in touch with her well established fan base in the Middle East and in Kuwait particularly where she signed an agreement with the Kuwaiti firm “Smile” for the usage of short songs and pictures on the mobile. The idea was a success and more opportunities awaited the rising star… Throughout her journey in the spotlight, the press accompanied Sophia’s every move. Never getting enough of her mysterious magnetism, almost every prestigious magazine featured her face on the cover page time after time. Sophia has released her first album as a solo artist,and shot two music videos from it: kelmet hobb and baheb feek, both clips are considered to be an important step forward for Sophia whose popularity grows everyday in the world of music. Her father is Casablancais (of Casablanca). Sofia grew in Casablanca and primary school and secondary school was in Casablanca. She joined Star Academy to improve her singing abilities and out of curiosity. She is good at playing the guitar and composing French lyrics. She has her own style of a coquette; a sweet, cute, quiet girl. During the first weeks of Star Academy she fell from 4,5m and injured her back in the sports class at the academy. This injury left her unable to move freely for few weeks. During her stay at the academy Sofia El Marikh became best friends with Bachar El Shatti and Cynthia Karam. She left the academy on Friday the 5th of March 2004 when she was nominated against Kuwaiti student Bachar Al Shatti who had a lot of popularity. Sophia beautiful face and voice, made her not only a singer but also a model. Sofia gained lots of fans and fan sites and groups on the net who all support her and love her.
