Sound of Seventy Three

Sound of Seventy Three blend the DIY approach of indie-rock and the gritty, moody atmosphere of trip-hop & electronica with the epic cinematic scope of post-rock and the noise & texture of shoegaze to come up with completely unique instrumental pop music. Starting as the bedroom recording project of New York born multi-instrumentalist Douglas Johnson in 2005, Sound of Seventy Three eventually morphed into a live-band featuring two guitars, bass and drums that played instrumental post-rock primarily in the Atlanta area. Eventually finding playing live limiting and a distraction from recording - his primary interest - Doug returned to recording in his home studio as the primary focus for Sound of Seventy Three in 2010. Initially writing cinematic guitar instrumentals for his band that could easily be played out live with bass, guitar, and drums, Sound of Seventy Three's latest music is much more vast in instrumentation and increasingly uses the studio itself as an instrument and the sound of recording media - record dust, tape hiss, crusty low-bit sampling - as a 'feature' of the music. This is especially evident in the "remixes" of the original tracks which are essentially completely new compositions using a sample or two from the original track as a starting point.
