State River Widening is the London, UK-based instrumental trio made up of David Sheppard, Keiron Phelan and John Steele. Formed in 1998 and named after the title of a Chinese propaganda photo, the band has released three full lengths on both the Rocket Girl and Vertical Form labels, as well as singles on Gold Hole and German label Beau Rivage. DOA described "the group’s intoxicating back-to-nature acoustic explorations" as "the Anglo-agrarian answer to Chicago’s urbanite post-rock crowd." Sheppard himself said in an interview that the band is "interested in doing something more pastoral, more meditative". The band is currently on hiatus while the duo of Phelan and Sheppard work on other projects, including Phelan Sheppard, Phelan Sheppard / Niandra Ladies, Continental Film Night, and Smile Down Upon Us.
