Detroit’s Stef Chura is the exact kind of DIY musician you would expect to have “like, hours and hours of voice memos.” Having cut her teeth on years in the Michigan underground, Chura’s Bandcamp is a vault of 90s-leaning bedroom pop akin to fellow college rock revivalists like Palehound or Car Seat Headrest. Her songs take on the frenzied melodies of thoughts she can’t escape, and “Slow Motion” spurs from a headlong crush that “is not stopping for no one.” It’s also the first single from the newly minted Stef Chura Band, the polished outfit featuring drummer Ryan Clancy and experimental pop fixture Fred Thomas on bass. Love can be nauseating, and in a way, this song can be, too. Its conflicting time signatures and unexpected stops are as blunt and unforgiving as the false-starts to a relationship: “Right when it starts to feel like home/It’s time to go.” Even her vocals feel fastened to an unpredictable romance, warbling as she begs whatever’s happening to slow down. With the lo-fi charm of a Liz Phair cassingle, Chura retains the get-out-of-my-head immediacy that leads a person to sit down on the floor of their room and record a song until the feeling goes away.
