Steve Smith

There are several artists with this name: 1) Steve Smith (born on August 21, 1954 in Brockton, Massachusetts) is an American drummer. He attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He played with jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty before joining the rock band Journey during Journey's most commercially successful period (1978-1985) and on their 1996 comeback album Trial by Fire, as well as Journey offshoot The Storm. He has played with pop artists such as Mariah Carey, Andrea Bocelli, Savage Garden, Bryan Adams, world musicians such as Zakir Hussain, and with various jazz musicians and groups including Mike Mainieri's Steps Ahead, Wadada Leo Smith, Tom Coster, Ahmad Jamal, Dave Liebman, Larry Coryell, Victor Wooten, Mike Stern, Randy Brecker, Scott Henderson, Frank Gambale, Stuart Hamm, Dweezil Zappa, Anthony Jackson, Aydin Esen , George Brooks, Michael Zilber, Steve Marcus, Andy Fusco, Kai Eckhardt, Lee Musiker, Howard Levy, Oteil Burbridge, Jerry Goodman, and Bill Evans. Steve's own jazz group is Vital Information. In 2001 Modern Drummer Magazine named Steve as one of the Top 25 Drummers of All Time, in 2002 he as voted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame, and finally in 2003 his Hudson Music DVD "Steve Smith Drumset Technique - History of the U.S. Beat" was voted #1 Educational DVD of 2003. Also in 2003, Steve Smith and Buddy's Buddies -- the Buddy Rich alumni quintet -- released two CDs on the Tone Center label that were recorded live at the famous London jazz club Ronnie Scott's; "Very Live at Ronnie Scott's Set One & Set Two." -- 2) Steve Smith is a British House musician most notable for being one of the members of the band Dirty Vegas. In 1992, Steve auditioned for a band called Higher Ground, and was taken on as a percussionist. Shortly after joining the bands lead singer left, and Steve stepped forward to take his spot. After the split of Higher Ground, Steve moved from London to Ibiza, where he wrote song called "Days Go By". Shortly after writing this song, he ran into an old friend and DJ, Paul Harris. Paul had been working with a friend named Ben Harris (no relation). The three of them got together and formed the band Dirty Vegas. The song "Days Go By" went on to win a Grammy Award. After Dirty Vegas' break-up, Steve decided to continue his musical career. He is releasing his first solo album, entitled "This Town" on February 18, 2008. The album is being released on Steve's own music label, "G.A.S. Records" -- 3) Steve Smith was a member of the short-lived American country-rock band Smith Perkins Smith of the early 70s. They released two albums. -- 4) Steve Smith of East Flat Rock, North Carolina plays both the mountain dulcimer and hammered dulcimer. He and his wife Jean perform regularly throughout the region, and Steve also puts together the newsletter and music for the Western North Carolina Dulcimer Collective (WNCDC). Steve and Jean have performed in at least nineteen states and two other countries, as well as on radio and on television. They have taught workshops on both instruments at festivals in Kansas, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Illinois, Georgia and North Carolina, as well as at specially-scheduled workshops in several states. Steve has also taught courses in Mountain Dulcimer at Blue Ridge Community College in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Steve won the 1984 National Hammered Dulcimer Championships at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. He returned to win the 1985 National Mountain Dulcimer Championships at Winfield, only the second person to win both of these Championships. He has also won regional titles in both instruments. Jean has also placed in regional championships in the hammered dulcimer and in ensembles, besides playing the guitar and singing for over forty years. He has a track here on the Unrestrained as the Wind CD called No Doubt. The track Plane of Sacrifice is credited to him, but he only wrote the melody. -- 5) Steve and Ruth Smith are a couple from Zionville in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. They play a unique blend of Appalachian Americana music featuring hammered and mountain dulcimer (Ruth), guitar and old-time banjo (Steve). -- 6) Steven K.
