There are at least three bands called "The Prayers". The first, the guitar band from Scotland, was active from 87-89 and released only two singles, released on Egg records, and one other song, released on a compilation. They were part of the late 80 UK sound captured on Egg, Creation, and Sarah records, but were grittier, with less of a purely pop sound, than their contemporaries. Egg Records released "Everything but the Cat", a compilation of their entire recorded output and several demos, in 2003. The more recent "The Prayers" is a nu jazz band from San Diego. Currently, the band consists of Brandon Welchez (Vocals/Guitar), Andrew Miller (Vocals/Guitar), Charles Rowland (Bass), and Joel Black (Drums). Unlike most bands out of San Diego, The Prayers in no way wish to emulate Drive Like Jehu. What they bring to the table is a melodic, poppy sound reminiscent of 60's bubblegum pop. Originally consisting of three of the members of San Diego's infamous jazz/hardcore hybrid The Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower, Welchez recruited fellow musician and friend Andrew Miller as a second guitarist and backing vocals. After much contemplation, the band's drummer Brian Hill left the band to pursue other musical aspirations, and the band recruited Joel Black of Lion Fever. The sound of the Prayers is very different than that of the Plot. Welchez was once quoted saying “I'm sure a lot of Plot fans will hate The Prayers, but a lot of Plot fans are morons.” Welchez also said the transition between the abrasive, upfront sound of The Plot to, in many ways, the more light-hearted approach of The Prayers a sign of his, as well as the other members of the plot, maturation; not only through music, but in life as well. The members of the Prayers along with bandwide friend/Art Fag records owner Mario Orduno can also be seen playing and "DJing" at some of the local bars in the San Diego area such as The Beauty Bar, The Whistle Stop, and The Tower Bar. The third is another Glasgow based guitar band who are heavily influenced by the likes of The Jesus and Mary Chain and Spacemen 3. Read more on Last.fm.
