Forming in Brisbane in 2003, The Gin Club casually coagulated around a regular open mic night held in a Brisbane pub. Originally based on a fairly elastic lineup, the band has stabilized but it is still a large ensemble with seven songwriters. Winning one day of recording time through a cancer fundraiser at Brisbane club The Troubadour enabled The Gin Club to record their first album. Releasing the album through a label (Plus One) associated with one of Brisbane's main alternative record stores gave the band a reason to tour nationally, where they began building a reputation for their intense live shows. With an eclectic mix of traditional folk, blues and country styles, the band members constantly swap instruments that include accordion, piano, acoustic and electric guitar, drums, harmonica, cello, saxophone, banjo, mandolin, organ and keyboards. Originally the band's influences were obvious references to artists such as The Band, Bob Dylan, Crowded House, and Neil Young. However with the release of their album, Junk in March 2008, the band's sound has broadened to acknowledge classic r&b arrangements from artists like Otis Redding and Sam Cooke. Touring extensively throughout Australia with local acts including Youth Group, Tim Rogers, The Red Sun Band, The Gin Club has supported international artists Papa M, Iron and Wine, Lamb Chop, Tony Joe White, Kevin Montgomery, Laura Veirs, and Australian artists Paul Kelly, You Am I, Pete Murray, Andrew Morris and various others.
