Ultra Dolphins are continually on the move and hail from varied residences such as Brooklyn NY, Richmond VA, Philadelphia PA and the Catskill Mountains of upstate NY, - mainly based in Richmond, Virginia, United States. Formed in 2005. When not touring in a beat-up van with broken windows they work in puppet shops, vegan cookie factories, and porno warehouses. Born and raised in basements of Harrisonburg, VA, the Ultra Dolphins seemed content to stay there. Their live performances which were fabled to include pyrotechnics, nudity, stir frying, and relentless free form noise and improvisation, soon found them a cult-like following of like-minded weirdos who became integrated into the spectacle of rock and punk confusion. With guitars that sometimes crash like percussion instruments and sometimes riff like Jimmy Page over a thick rhythm section, the band was somehow both more chaotic yet tighter than anything else going on in the underground. An urgent punk energy fueled each and every sing-along, power-riff, infectious bass-line and ferocious downbeat. Now, many tours and years later, the energy created at their live shows has spread far, like some sort of glorious disease with no sign of a cure. The "Why Are You Laugh" release (March 2006) contains the very songs that started the growing Ultra Dolphins mania that we feel has been a long time coming. Having recorded with the best of the best (Jason LaFerrera at Recorditorium and Don Zientara at Inner Ear) and having toured relentlessly with such enthusiastic and downright crucial songs, it seems fitting that Ultra Dolphins finally release their favorite of their early material on one disc with beautiful and hilarious artwork and re-master the tracks for optimal excellence of sound quality. The inevitable debut full-length has been a long, long time coming... and anticipations are at an all-time high. "Mar" is it's brief title, but the substance to this beast is near immeasurable. A surprising amount of piano now joins the patented usage of frantic guitars, wilder vocals, whip-lash bass lines and all-out pummeling percussion. On "Mar" Ultra Dolphins are really branching out in a surprising and ambitious way. The result is an incredibly diverse and captivating album that should probably reside somewhere alongside other "math rock" and "post hardcore" albums like Drive Like Jehu's "Yank Crime," Rodan's "Rusty," or Shudder to Think's "Pony Express Record." Regardless of what you want to call it, this is true passion and energy, created by these three young men and captured on tape by a fine fellow named Jason Laferrera at Richmond's Recorditorium studio. Thirty-one minutes in thirteen tracks of true innovative bliss is what you get, oh... and one hell of a powerful live show to up the ante. Expect them on the road from now until the Earth's destruction, as there is no light at the end of the great tunnel known only as Ultra Dolphins. The original lineup: Nate Rappole - guitar / vocal; Tim Morris - bass guitar / vocal; Frayser Micou - drums. http://www.myspace.com/ultradolphins Read more on Last.fm.
