Victims of Science (aka Gxp, original maker of The Device has been Modified), after a joke became a success, gave the song some more polish & finish, releasing a second version. On the Tindeck Audio site, where "The Device has been Modified" was posted, Gxp has two other songs. One a remix of Man of Constant Sorrow by the The Soggy Bottom Boys (from the film O Brother, Where Art Thou?). The other is another video game remix, this time with audio from the game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. "The Device has been Modified" contains voice samples from the game "Portal" and is simultaneously a parody, a tribute and a song in its own right. In addition, found on the tag of "The Device has been Modified v2" is a short message, transcribed below: "Thanks for Portal, Valve, you are awesome. Wow I didn't know this would have such a warm reception. I went back and put the effort into it that I should have the first time." On the facepunchstudios site, Gxp said of the song, "I'm surprised at the warm reception of what basically started as a joke, but projects seem to take on a life of their own. I'm glad people seem to like it and it sucks that people encountered problems with playback. I usually encode mp3s as Lame VBR for better quality but that seems to have backfired on some people. A while ago I spent the time to put in the effort polishing/finishing it that I should have originally. Plus it's CBR so, no playback problems." Read more on Last.fm.
