Rubens Vieira Marques (Vieira) and Rubião Vieira (Vieirinha) were two brothers from Itajubi, state of São Paulo, that formed one of the most traditional duo of brazilian caipira music of their time. Singing and playing viola since their childhood in the late-30's and the 40's, the duo was discovered by Tonico & Tinoco, that invited the two brothers to play with them in local cinemas. After some years playing in local festivities, radio stations and bazaars, Vieira & Vieirinha went to São Paulo in 1951, searching for an opportunity at Rádio Nacional, the most popular radio station from São Paulo at the time. There, they hosted the program 'Sertão na Cidade'. They also appeared for some years in the program 'Alma da Terra', from the famous Rádio Tupi. Vieira & Vieirinha released their first album (78 rpm) in 1963 ('O Canoeiro Não Morreu' / 'Nova Londrina'), and since them the duo release almost 35 LPs. Their musical journey only ceased with Vieirinha's death in 1991. After some time away from the musical scene, Vieira started recording and performing with his son, forming with him the duo 'Vieira & Vieira Jr.'. Vieira died in 2001. Vieira & Vieirinha were mostly known for their performances and recordings of catira, a sort of brazilian tradicional dance in which the performers clap hands and stomp their feet on a wood plataform, generating a percussion effect that is accompanied by viola variations.
