Chamber of Sorrows represents the vision and emotions of one man, John Shamus Gaffney. (click here for more info on John) The project was conceived in late 2003 as a means for John to put out his music without having to cater to the needs of other musicians who did not understand his vision. Using only the string bass, voice, piano and guitar what resulted is a sound that is very unique, emotional and moving. Often described as Neo-Classical Orchestral Darkness, one genre or label can not do the sound of Chamber of Sorrows justice. Elements of Gothic, Metal, Chamber music, Folk and Darkwave can all be found in the music. Regardless of how it is described, the end result is one of being moved emotional. In the end this is the ultimate goal for Chamber of Sorrows. The first Chamber of Sorrows song ever written "Prayers for the Dying" was posted on soundclick.com in early December 2003. The purpose at the time was to provide a means for John to let his friends hear this new song he had wrote. The response to "Prayers from the Dying" was so overwhelming that John quickly began writing more material. Within only a few months Chamber of Sorrows was receiving hundreds of plays and downloads a day on soundclick. Currently at the 9 month mark, Chamber of Sorrows has received over 40,000 song plays. "Prayers for the Dying" quickly reached #1 on soundclicks metal and gothic charts, where it stayed for months. "For and Angel Shall Watch Over Me" and "The Hour of Darkness, pt. 1" also reached the top 5 on the metal, gothic and orchestral charts. Emails began pouring in requesting a cd, so John decided to the time was right to record a proper and professionally done full length. Entering Brian J. Anthony studios in early summer 2004 the recording had begun for the first full length Chamber of Sorrows cd. Brian was able to capture the perfect atmosphere for the music. By using sound samples and effects, the dark, sorrowful romantic sound that has become a trademark of Chamber of Sorrows was created. The cd was finished at the end of the summer and copies are now available for purchase (see the "buy cd" page) The next steps for Chamber of Sorrows is to try and secure a record deal that will hopefully bring the music to a wider audience. John is also seeking out musicians to turn the group into one that can play out live and tour. Read more on Last.fm.
