You may have heard of Marijne van der Vlugt, she was a presenter at MTV Europe who left to sing in the indie band Salad. If so then you’ll remember that Salad were a 90’s alternative band with a cult following, sporting a abrasive, oddball edge, and were famed for their high energy live performances. Drink The Elixir is their best known hit from the Album Drink Me (top 20 UK Charts), and is included in Robert Dimery’s book 1001 songs you must hear before you die. Salad’s proudest moment was being part of the War Child Charity Record ‘Help’ when Terry Hall asked Salad to join him on the Mamas and Papas song ‘Dream a little Dream’. Now immortalized on a Cbeebies promo, and as Marijne and Terry both have small children, they are chuffed to bits that they are currently serenading 1 to 4 years olds every night... Mike Mason was one half of the 4AD Band Swallow, they released their debut album Blow in 1992. Initially compared with Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine, they cut out their own niche and still have a cult following. Some of Mason's other musical projects include writing and producing with artist Peter Murphy, and working on the Dalis Car Album 2 with Mick Karn, before he sadly passed away How did Mike and Marijne get together? Debbie Smith (Echobelly & Curve) introduced them ...they sampled each others work, liked it and away they went…Mike’s the music man, Marijne is the wordsmith and melody maker....together they are Cowboy Racer With 90‘s girl fronted BritPop and 4AD’s experimental guitar bands now far behind them, Cowboy Racer found they had a lot of growing up to do....Cowboy Racer encapsulates those years. Given life’s many distractions The Cowboy Racer Project could easily have stalled from the start. But given the time and attention invested both Mike and Marijne were determined to make it happen. Now they are ready to come out and play. Their Debut Album LOVE STatiOnaRY spins the usual yarn of loves lost, found or never even had, but in a sumptuously lyrical fashion. This filmic set of songs, flow over with emotion and off beat electronic charm. The whole collection has a lovely sprinkling of glamour with a gentle undercurrent of something a little bit sinister...but in a good way. Yellow Horse is the first single to be released from LOVE STatiOnaRY and there are already Yellow Horse fans across the globe as the track got its first airing on American TV in an episode of Grey’s Anatomy. See Marijne Cavorting with a Yellow-ish Horse (A beautiful Palomino called Megan) here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rdW_0c6zvY in a video directed by up and coming American Promo Director Lilah Vandenburgh (BlackDog (RSA) Productions) The Live band - Cowboy Racer have been recruiting On Drums - from Richmond, Virginia.... Mark Easter (The Harlem Yacht Club) On Bass and Keyboards, all the way from Seattle.....Tricia Nearn (Algae,Pluko) On Guitar all the way from Japan....Yosuke Shinokubo (Mika Bomb) The band are currently rehearsing for a mini tour around the country starting with The Jericho Tavern in Oxford on May 7th 2011 LOVE STatiOnaRY is out now on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify and can be heard on Soundcloud or MySpace Read more on Last.fm.
