Hailing from Malmö, Sweden, David Fridlund is the singer, songwriter and David in David & the Citizens. You could think that he wouldn’t need a solo project but he most certainly does. David & the Citizens is a band in every meaning of the word, though David writes all the songs the band makes the songs flourish; nowadays more than before. But since David is somewhat of a creative madman the band isn’t enough. The release of his first solo album “Amaterasu” was the start of a new creative boom for him. The band had taken a more rock oriented approach and all the songs he wrote on his electric guitar found ground there. But he still writes songs on his beloved piano and instead of trying to pitch everything in under the same umbrella; he started his solo project to separate the two rather distinctively separate song writing styles. You can say that the main difference between David’s solo project and David & the Citizens is, piano for the solo songs and electric guitar for the band, but that isn’t really the complete picture. I believe that there is a drive in David to stand alone, to have total freedom, an unconscious feeling in him that he stands outside everything in life and society, and he needs that musically too. Therefore a solo project. I have said to myself and David that I, as a label will never interfere or have opinions about what he does as a solo artist. That is one of the main criteria for the solo project. David does what the hell he wants. And therefore it becomes extraordinary, unique and a new music genre is born every time. His first solo album was called “Amaterasu” and was released in December 2004. Much engaged in the album was his girlfriend Sara Culler, she herself known for her song writing, as a duet partner and background singer. The album title is also taken from her middle name. From the album we picked two singles, “April & May” and “White Van” both on high rotation on radio stations all over the world. "Amaterasu" was partly recorded at an ex-slaughter house, backed by a few musicians, and produced, recorded and performed by David with help from his brother Joel. Finalized at Señorita Studios, Hässleholm, where Johan T Karlsson tweaks knobs and took the reigns for the final mix. If there is a place where something is minimal and experimental - it's where "Amaterasu" docks. “Amaterasu” is also released in USA on Hidden Agenda/Parasol, Japan on Egging/1977 Recordings and in Europe through BB*Island. The album got it shares of road travel, mostly in Europe where David did two memorable tours with his band. David is currently working on new material and a new album. From what we have heard, we have never heard anything like this. Try to imagine Postal Service, without any knowledge on electronics paired with Queen doing a cabaret in an emotional hurricane.
