Hedda Gabler - Act 4 Hedda Gabler's vision was to extract beauty out of chaos. Her goal was to rock hard and dark, granite rather than concrete. Hedda Gabler performed between 1982 and 1990, when the band fell apart in a disgracious manner. Today their musical legacy lives on in a series of hard-to-find releases and re-releases. Hedda Gabler was incorporated in 1982 by three musicians in The Netherlands with Wim de Jonge at the center as singer/guitarist, mutating from earlier line-ups like Boots For Dancing and Upset Music. Their initial tracks were released on cassettes. Following the departure of Wim de Jonge a second line-up of the band released in 1985 their first EP 'Scratching F.U.C.K on the Windshield', to wide acclaim (and John Peel endorsement and airplay). A new drummer completed the final Hedda Gabler, issuing their landmark LP 'Mudhoney' in 1987. Before their final seismic rift the same combo released the LP 'House of Mourning' in 1990, featuring their hit single 'Eating the Lion' (played on MTV's Alternative Nation'). Admired by few but largely unloved, Hedda Gabler's ambition was not matched by success. Hedda Gabler had private demons to expel and a voice of her own, signing about life, loss and colours. Their music was of the highest standard, and while their tracks were captured live in real time, Hedda Gabler's songs stand strong today. Their compilation CD 'Layers' (xtinct-001, 2001) digs into Hedda Gabler's music in stratigraphic order, and is evidence of the legacy of a band that deserves a distinct place in Global Rock History.
