Meet Hexes & Ohs. The story behind the Montreal-based electropop duo begins with a pair of highschool sweethearts and spans a decade of couplehood, musical projects and everything in between. 2005 saw the release of their debut album “Goodbye Friend, Welcome Lover” on Noise Factory Records, the first full-length effort Edmund and Heidi had ever attempted. There were no distractions, just the two of them in their apartment strumming guitars, singing songs, turning knobs and pressing record. Three years have passed, the little album they created in their apartment have taken them to places they never expected. Playing showcases at CMJ, Osheaga, Pop Montreal, Canadian Music Week, North By North East, Ladyfest, Halifax Pop Explosion and the CBC radio 3 national tour, opening for Mates of State, Sloan, Kid Koala, Au Revoir Simone, as well as Tokyo Police Club, Pony Up! and We Are Wolves. Furthering the unexpected, Hexes & Ohs’ debut album topped Canadian campus radio charts, reaching the 2nd position nationally and remained in the top 10 for several months. The album’s single “Whadaya Know?” also made CBC radio 3’s list of top 50 singles of 2005 and its video featured on Much Music’s the Wedge. Now, fast-forward to 2008, they’ve played a lot of shows, Edmund and Heidi have done a lot of growing up. They’ve taken to the art of performance. The once shoe-gazing lap-popping duo have become an energetic live force. Sharing duties on vocals, guitars, laptop, synths, bass and drums, packing surprises into every song. With this new found confidence, the duo’s new songs benefited. Melodies became sharper, song-structures bolder and the musicianship more inspired than ever. They discovered how to write a great hook without losing the intricacies and depth that has brought them this far. Look for Hexes & Ohs’ new album “Bedroom Madness”, produced by Byron Wong (the Crystal Method, David Usher), out September 2nd 2008. Read more on Last.fm.
