Not too long after the gospel music came to Sweden, the gospel choir Joybells was born. The year was 1963 and the energy and rhythm which has left its mark in the churches among African-Americans was totally unknown for the Swedish people. Probably that’s why Joybells got popular all around the country pretty fast. Even though there was a lot of criticism against this new type of music, there was no doubt the gospel music had come to stay. Joybells, who took its name from one of the first songs in its repertoire, have during the years continued to stay in touch with its musical roots in America. Above all, Joybells have built a relationship to its audience around our own country and in other parts of Europe. Besides singing, supporting different charity projects has been a natural part of Joybells’ activity. The gospel music has influenced a lot of different music genres and Joybells has often been giving a contribution of its sound to other musical artists, Swedish and foreign, who’ve wanted gospel sound on their albums or concerts. Although, the success and long history of the choir isn’t first of all due to hard musical work. The choir has it's spiritual home in the church of Immanuel, in Örebro, where you don’t just practice together, you gather around your faith in Jesus, who’s the one you sing about in Christian songs.
