Matti Roots IS the future of accessible soulful music. Many people in the recent past have tried to blend and fuse hip hop, soul, jazz and pop invariably creating something bland, or totally derivative (with a few exceptions of course). As the writer, producer and performer with a deep musical education Matti Roots has the ability to set his own boundaries. Each track clearly draws on influences of the past but with a sound and sensibility that is unquestionably fresh. As the name suggests, Matti has ROOTS. Roots being a knowledge and understanding of music, across the board, on a multi dimensional level. A multi instrumentalist and schooled at the Royal College of Music in classical, jazz, electronic music, world music and pretty much everything in between, Matti can effortlessly straddle the genres. His production and remix credits include artists as diverse as So Solid, Natasha Beddingfield, Slum Village and Justin Timberlake. He also produced and co-wrote two tracks for EMI reggae artist Smujji, championed by Radio 1 DJ Ras Kwame and as well as Iman's debut single 'Who Was i Trying to Fool' released on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood label last year. Matti's first track as a solo artist 'See You Again' was unleashed last year on the underground as a limited release and was met with unanimous approval. Radio 1/ 1 Xtra DJ Ronnie Herel described it as 'Real Soul Business', touch magazine gave it 4/5 and more recently Matti has gained support from Kiss FM's Manny Norte, XFM's Unabombers and Galaxy's Steve Sutherland. Yet the records and production only demonstrate one side of the Matti phenomenon. With access to some of the UK's premier musicians Matti's live performances are nothing less than thrilling, having headlined the Jazz Cafe 3 times last year, The UK's leading jazz magazine Straight No Chaser was moved to describe Matti's stage show as, "Catch-a-fire spellbinding!"
