Night School is a band from San Francisco, California, United States that blends dreamy shoegaze elements with garage rock. They were formed in 2013 by Alexandra Morte of Camera Shy and formerly of Whirr. She was soon joined by drummer Baylie Arin, and the pair integrated song ideas and plotted their first EP. It took six hours to record. The songs were bounced back-and-forth between Morte and Arin, who contributed various alternative synth, post-punk, and shoegaze elements. Recorded, mixed, and mastered at Atomic Garden in Palo Alto by Jack Shirley, that six hour session produced Heart Beat; four tracks of pure bliss rock inspired by the sad love songs of 1960’s girl groups like The Shirelles, The Crystals, and The Shangri-las. After the recording of Heart Beat, Sarah Trevena, a friend of Arin's, was asked to join Night School as lead guitarist. The band shared three demos on their Facebook (one of them was covered by Brandon Setta of Nothing), and announced that the forthcoming EP would contain new versions of these demos and one new song. In May 2014, Graveface Records uploaded a track from Heart Beat on their SoundCloud called Birthday. In September, Cheyenne Avant joined the band as a bassist. The Heart Beat EP was released October 7th, 2014 on Graveface. Night School updated their Facebook on January 7th, 2015 with a lineup without Sarah Trevena and a new picture of the band as a trio. Later that month, a new member named Emily was added to the group as a guitarist.
