Tôg proves that Norway is one of the world’s major hotbeds of futuristic disco. In the grand tradition of Lindstrøm and Todd Terje, Tôg has been using their Nordic sensibilities to enrapture hip-shaking audiences from Oslo to Austin, from SXSW to Roskilde Festival. They were even on MTV! After two radio hits in their home country, Tôg is back with a fresh slab of slasher flick-tinted space boogie intended for the eternal party. On their new single “Maridalen”, Tôg pits deep synth sequencing against wearily impassioned vocals for a cut as heart-wrenching as it is ecstatic. A strong sense of narrative binds the song, a style arc that will ring familiar to fans of Røyksopp´s Eple and Oslo’s disco scene. For their sophomore effort, Feiring, Tôg enlisted the mixing skills of LCD Soundsystem collaborator and DFA mainstay Eric Broucek to make 45 minutes of bangers. Tôg’s songwriter and producer Lars Christian dug deep into his record collection, finding inspiration in the good vibes of Jai Paul and Italo Disco, Nile Rodgers and Chicago House. To help with the songwriting process, Tôg brought in Ådne Meisfjord of the 4AD-signed Norwegian band, Serena-Maneesh. The group’s leader claims that he “likes making cheesy music cool,” because he knows that disco and funk have as much heart as they do groove. Sung in his native tongue, Olsen’s lyrics brim with sincerity and optimism as he contemplates eternity and discovering new love after the party.
