There are at least two artists with the name The Love Junkies. 1. A UK cover band (active from 2000 to present) 2. An Australian grunge rock band (active from 2009 to present) 1.The Love Junkies were formed in 2000 when singer and drummer team, Rox Clayton Scott and Marcus Bishop partnered up with Silent Prayers guitarist Dave Patrick and Speakeasy bass player, Nathan Dawe. Combined with a small brass section the band went on to play a number of successful function gigs. In 2001, the band landed a residency at Studio 41 in Canterbury. At that time Chris Wong joined the band on guitar to fulfil the club gigs as a trio. As the function gigs came piling in, Dave joined up for the residency, Chris moved to Bass guitar and the established classic 4 piece line-up of the band was set. 2002 was the year it all took off. Since then the band have been playing constantly, with gigs more or less every weekend, moreso during the summer months. The mission was always the strong and overwhelming desire to get out there and play good classic music, soulfully, authentically and without the theatricals (i.e. no makeup, wigs, hairy chests, medallions and bs). 2. “Ears exploding never felt so good.” – US blogger Whiskey Teeth. Hailing from the foothills of Perth, Western Australia, The Love Junkies were founded by singer/songwriter Mitch McDonald and drummer Lewis Walsh at the end of 2009. The duo met many moons prior in high school, jamming out the beginnings of what would become The Love Junkies. After playing their very first shows as fresh youngsters to hunters and bikies in the hills, they were offered a show with local stars The Novocaines. It was at this show they met The Novocaines’ frontman Corey Marriot, who offered to record the band’s debut EP at Ampersonic studios. By the time the band hit the studio a mere three months later, long time high school friend Robbie Rumble (his actual name) had joined on bass to complete the lineup. 2010 was a big year for The Love Junkies, who supported the cream of WA and national acts, including Numbers Radio, Emperors, The Shake Up, Harlequin League, Kill Devil Hills, Ouch! My Face, Young Revelry and New Zealand heavy weights Die! Die! Die!. 2011 saw the band release their debut self titled EP independently. The EP launch sold out in no time with punters who missed out on tickets jumping the back wall of the venue to catch a glimpse at the band’s powerhouse set. The EP received local feature album on RTR FM and rave reviews. “An unrelenting onslaught of fuzzy guitar fury, the five tracks contained within are fast, hard and immediate, with infectious melodies that will linger in your mind long after the record has stopped spinning” – David Sayers (SPACE SHIP NEWS). Soon after the release, the band jumped back into the studio, this time with producer Dave Parkin (Red Jezabel, Jebediah, Snowman, The Panda Band), from Blackbird Studios to record their latest single “Crying Rhymes” and b-side “Peter Rabbit”. The single was released on the 30th July to an ecstatic crowd at Mojo’s Bar in North Fremantle. “Catchy, tidy, amped up indie rock from a young Perth three-piece. Crying Rhymes has a swinging rhythm, heavy guitar fuzz and an easy, grunge-style vocal melody.” – Simone Ubaldi (BEAT Magazine). The single was well received, with airplay on local and national stations such as RTR FM, PBS, SYN FM as well as being spun on Triple J’s Home and Hosed and being added to Dom Alessio’s Unearthed podcast. “These guys have the live chops – a short sharp burst of really great fiery frenetic indie rock.” – Dom Alessio (triple j) The success of the single has snagged the band upcoming shows with the likes of The Vasco Era, Papa vs. Pretty and British India before the year is out. The band are also heading back into the studio with Canadian producer Allan Brey in October to record their third release which will be out before summer, setting The Love Junkies up for an exciting 2012.
