Their music arouses curiosity as well as their name, a cut ´n´paste of words oddly juxtaposed. Their name, a band?s name yet. You already form a band even when there is only two people in it. The masquerade is over, let?s start introductions: Vista Le Vie is Max, from Dijon (east of France) and Gilles, from Avignon (south). They met in Paris (bless capital city centralisation!). Max started at the early age of six learning classic percussions at the local music school, dabbled with rock ´n´ roll, got a crush for Jacques Loussier´s record Pulsion (drums & piano album of a famous jazz pianist), overfed with Coltrane´s jazz and then got fond of reggae, chased 70s soul nuggets and, eventually, in the back of his pals, feverishly attended Laurent Garnier´s DJ sets ?who had a residency at L´An-Fer, the local techno mecca in the early 90s. He then moved to the big city, Paris. Menial jobs. Gilles got his musical education learning classical piano at the local music school too. He listened as well to Miles Davis, Coltrane´s and, above all, Thelonious Monk´s music, which, in the end turned out to be confusing for someone who was brought up in a Cartesian environment. He then fell on U.R.´ s sound, the Detroit techno gurus . U stands for Underground: there´s more than a mere aesthetics option here. Moved then to the big city as well. And found a job at the now-defunct Passage du Nord, a local music theatre where he could meet Trilok Gurtu (percussionist), Zawinful (founder & member of the jazz band Weather Reports) and John Zorn NY (saxophonist). Eventually, they met at Radio Nova, where Max works as a radio programmer (is still actually) and Gilles directs broadcast programs (only for a while...). They could meet DJ Gilb.R and Laurent Garnier. Quite good mentors for wide-open ears. Finally, Vista Le Vie was born. Large (nocturnal of course ?) sessions of manipulation on machines & instruments, with the deeply-rooted will to build images out of sounds. Max deals with rhythmic structures, Gilles deals with melodies. Well, that´s the way it should ideally be. Actually, they always shape their musical universe together, a musical universe based upon loops and post-produced sounds. In the end, it is therefore impossible to identify but a sample. The guys at F Com, namely Eric Morand and Laurent Garnier, got hooked into it from day one. Hence they decided to release Vista Le Vie´s first mini-album Don´t, as a limited edition CD, almost without any publicity. However, it was singular enough to arouse curiosity. It was followed shortly after by the release of "Slip It Under", in the spring of 2004.At last, their first full-length debut album is released so sit down,(relax) and watch a « Futuristic Family Film », outstandingly chic, 11 audio shortcuts which will bring images to your imagination.
