BIG DADDY MOOCHIN

Big Daddy Moochin formed in 2001, with an aim to pay tribute to the soul-funk classics of the butter funk era (1968-1974), playing predominantly female vocal classics from artists such as Ann Sexton, Mary ‘Queenie’ Lions and Marva Witney. BDM has had an ever-evolving line-up growing and shrinking from gig to gig, but always delivering a high-octane dance floor funk set never to disappoint the crowd. After gigging heavily up and down the country for a couple of years playing every backwater club and seedy funk dive (the way we like them), BDM felt they had developed a sound and energy of their own that would justify being laid to wax. ‘No rest for the Wicked’ was produced by none other than Leigh Gracie from the mighty Speedometer, and released early in 2005 on the formidable Freestyle records to a series of good reviews. Following this was a contribution to the acclaimed compilation; Hot Funky & Sweaty on Acid Jazz, along side bands such as Sharon Jones and the Dapkings and anyone else who’s anyone in the modern funk scene. So after 4 years of playing in venues such as Jazz Café, Breakin’ Bread, Jelly Jazz and travelling as far a field as Finland, Germany & Holland alongside great bands like Breakestra, The Poets of Rhythm and Speedometer to name a few, not forgetting being the house band at Brighton’s premier funkclub – The Bake. What’s next? BDM’s current aim is to write more material with the view to release their debut album next year!
