Poropetra members: Nancy: vocals Elsa Pardonen: vocals Juha Jyrkäs: throat-singing, 12-stringed kantele, djembe Hittavainen: violin, jouhikko, mandoline, flutes & pipes, mouth harp, keyboards, backing vocals Markus Ylikoski: electric guitar, backing vocals Leo Herranen: bass, contrabass Poropetra is old Finnish and means the Elk of Hiisi (Hiiden hirvi in Finnish) from Finnish mythology. Elk is an old totem animal for Finno-Ugric and Siberian peoples, which is why it describes so well bands music – ethnic rock. The music gets it’s inspiration from the musical traditions of Finno-Ugric peoples, Tuvinian throat-singing and ethnic/world music altogether – combining in this mixture the elements of psychedelic rock, progressive rock, punk, blues and traditional heavy rock music. The more exact and accurate genre-definition shall be left to a listener to decide. Poropetra was founded by Juha Jyrkäs in the year 2002. The first demo-tape Poropetra -MCD was published already in the year 2004. Poropetra’s first full album, Sinihirwi presented the electrified distorted kantele sound along with basic electric guitar, which made a whole new soundscape to the songs. Sinihirwi album, published in 18.7.'07, showed all playing skills of the band members - in versatile and original way. A 250 print limited edition of Sinihirwi is now more or less sold out. Another edition will be taken in the near future. So far Poropetra hasn't yet signed with any label. In the autumn 2007 the new and skillfull guitar player, Markus Ylikoski joined the group. In the early 2008 Poropetra had yet more line-up changes: kantele-player Kuuraparta and drummer Aapo Hopeakoski left the band, since they had so much other duties in their lifes. Poropetra made some new songs and now they're much more driven with guitar. The new drummer Lari Hammarberg was found very quickly. He is known from the ethnic metal band Auringon Hauta (ex-Solgrav). Poropetra succeeded also to found a permanent bass player: Leo Herranen. With this new line-up the band is writing some new material, which will be much more versatile and interesting music that'll be heard somewhere in the future.. :) At the beginning of the summer 2009 drummer Lari Hammarberg decided to leave the band because of his duties with other projects. Thus in the next album the drums are played by session drummer. Poropetra will start the recording sessions of their forthcoming album during this summer. Poropetra split-up in the July 2015.
